'In the year 1972 there were only 476 Panchayats in the state but now we have 511 Panchayats and 527 Village Committees in ADC areas which never existed during Congress rule ; the Panchayats and Village Committees have been playing important roles in rural development work for which Tripura is known all over the country' said Manik Dey.

The minister who also holds the portfolio of food and civil supply said that the Left Front government has been playing a key role in making available to people essential commodities including rice and wheat through the public distribution system (PDS) . 'In the year 1972 Tripura had only 519 ration shops and 2.96 lakh card-holders but now the figures respectively are 1691 ration shops and 9.58 lakh card holders' said Manik Dey . He added that the state government has taken a decision in principle to computerise the public distribution system (PDS) in Tripura and has been trying to improve infrastructure to maintain and improve it.
