Brinda bats for universalisation of PDS, opposes UPA’s Food Security Bill

Agartala, Aug 01, 2012 : CPI (M) stalwart Brinda Karat today flayed the food security bill being prepared by the Centre ,terming it as 'food insecurity bill' and demanded 'universalisation of public distribution system (PDS)' to prevent any possible food crisis in future . Brinda was addressing a huge gathering at Agartala as part of the CPI (M)'s nationwide programme to press for an appropriate food security bill . 'What the Centre is currently preparing is a food insecurity bill which will give anything but security in food-related matter ; currently we have food buffer stock of 8 crore tons instead of the normal 3 crore tons but the huge surplus stock is being wasted or exported instead of being distributed among the poor people of the country ; this is the reason why we are demanding universalisation of the public distribution system (PDS) so that people belonging to both the BPL and ABL categories can have easy access to food at subsidized rates' said Brinda .

On the crucial issue of foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail sector Karat said that allowing FDI in multi-brand retail would be a recipe for disaster because American and European retail giants would establish their monopoly in India and take away livelihood of crores of people. 'We will not allow this perfidy to materialise on Indian soil and we appeal to all other parties and the people of this country to stop FDI in retail by any means ' said Brinda to thunderous applause. She also denounced the UPA-II for corruption and scam, asserting that in case there was a medal for corruption in the ongoing London Olympics the UPA-II ruling India would have been the sure winner of the gold.

Regarding Tripura, Brinda said that the Left Front government of this state deserved kudos for consistently opposing anti-people policies of Centre and for taking this small state to the path of unprecedented growth and development. 'Tripura has set a record in implementing the MGNREGA programme for the unemployed people below poverty line and has been duly rewarded for this by Centre; no other state in the country has been able to match this success and the Left Front government here must be congratulated for this' said Brinda , adding that Tripura's example should be emulated by states across the country. She also referred to the rapid growth and development of infrastructure in the state in the form of road connectivity, electrification, poverty alleviation, employment generation, strengthening of infrastructure in health, school and higher educational services. 'This is a great achievement and there is no precedent for this in the entire country; all this has been achieved amidst a severe resource constraint spawned by Centre's discriminatory and anti-people policies' said Brinda. She also predicted a comfortable victory for the Left Front in the upcoming assembly election and sought peoples support for this.
