Govt plans to bring 50 pc cultivable land under irrigation within 2017

Agartala, Aug 04, 2012 : The state government has adopted a plan to bring at least 50 percent of cultivable lands under cover of irrigation by the end of 12th Five Year Plan period, Badal Choudhury, minister for PWD (Water Resource) said here today. Interacting with the media at civil secretariat here this evening, the minister said that the department has adopted a special programme to bring 32 thousand 791 hectare of additional land by 2016-2017 under cover of irrigation. The state has currently got 2 lakh 55 thousand 241 hectares of land under cultivation out of which 1 lakh 10 thousand 524 hectares has been covered by irrigation.

The programme to cover 50 percent of cultivable lands by irrigation was adopted in 2008 to aid the perspective plan of achieving self-sufficiency in food production. 1,567 Lift Irrigation projects, 195 Deep Tube Wells, 42 diversion schemes and several small and medium irrigation projects are currently operational in the state as a part of the target.

Speaking about sustainable development in irrigation sector, Choudhury today stated that the department has step afoot on a series of projects to recharge ground-water level and stop steady depletion of the ground water-level.
