Tripura achieves self-sufficiency in fish production, Khagendra

Agartala, Aug 03, 2012 : Tripura has crossed targets of self-sufficiency in fish production during the last few years, Minister for Fisheries Khagendra Jamatia said on Thursday. Speaking to reporters at the civil secretariat here this evening, the minister said that while the World Health Organisation pegged 11 Kg fish as minimum annual requirement of fish protein for an ideal human being, Tripura currently produces over 15 Kg per head as annual fish allocation per head. He also said that the government had started by adopting a perspective plan for producing 13 Kg of fish per head. Terming the achievement as a huge success of the ruling Left Front government, the minister said that the government has further adopted a plan of crossing 20 Kg fish production per head by the end of 12th Five Year Plan period.

However, records of the department have well contradicted the statements of the minister. Speaking about consumer demand index in terms of fish, the minister said that 73 thousand 654 Metric Ton of fish is required in Tripura every year while the state’s own production stands at 53,349.46 MT with a steady shortfall of around 20 thousand MT every year. The deficit is still met by supplies from West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Bangladesh, he added.
