Guwahati-Agartala bus falls in deep gorge in Meghalaya: 31 persons killed

Agartala, Aug 08, 2012 : In a tragic road mishap, 31 persons were killed when a passenger bus coming from Guwahati towards Agartala fell in a deep gorge at Tongseng area of Meghalaya in the early morning of Wednesday.

Official sources said, a total of 31 dead bodies were recovered from the spot and a total of 27 more injured persons were shifted to a local hospital by the police and local administration.

Police official of East Jaintia Hills district and SP of Khiliehriat said, the bus had fallen in a 100 meter deep gorge in the hilly areas of Tongseng in the early morning of Wednesday between 4.30 am to 5.30 am.

Tongseng is about 150 km east of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. The privately-owned (Sherowali Transport of Agartala) night super bus (AS-01-7379) was on its way from Guwahati to Agartala.

SP Khiliehriat said, of the injured, seven were rushed to Silchar Medical College in southern Assam and the rest to nearby hospitals in the Meghalaya.

He said, the rescue operations are over and investigation has begun to ascertain the cause of the accident and all possible steps have been taken to provide help to all injured persons.

So far, three persons were identified; they are main driver Uttam Debnath of Narsingarh area of Agartala, co-driver Dhanu Ghosh of Ranirbazar and assistant of the bus Babul Debnath of Bishalgarh.

Transport authorities of Tripura said that the driver of the bus might have lost his control of the bus when he was taking a turn in the terrain on National Highway-44, known as Assam-Agartala highway.

Transport official added that the district medical team of Unokoti district, Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) and deputy Transport Officer (DTO) of the district were rushed to the spot after accident was reported.
