CM appeals Centre to take a generous stand on Padma bridge in B'desh

Agartala, Jul 26, 2012 : The chief minister Manik Sarkar appealed to the Centre to take a 'broad and liberal' view of the Padma bridge tangle in Bangladesh in the wake of withdrawal of financial assistance by the World Bank. 'World Bank actually stands for American imperialism which is trying to impose a new imperialist order across the world ; Bangladesh’s courageous Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken a very good stand by declaring that her government will build the bridge across the Padma ' said the chief minister. He asserted that government of India should take a 'broad and liberal stand' on the issue, adding that it would greatly strengthen Indo-Bangla ties of friendship and co-operation. Even though Sarkar did not spell out in so many words his comment was interpreted as pleading for Indian finance for the construction of the bridge across the Padma.

The chief minister was addressing an audience in the government run 'Nazrul Kala Kshetra' auditorium on the occasion of a joint exhibition of paintings by painters of Tripura and Bangladesh last night. In his speech Sarkar also expressed grave concern over the recent initiatives of US imperialists in Bangladesh. 'The US imperialists are trying to strengthen their presence in Bangladesh with hegemonistic designs on this country as well as on bordering areas of India's northeast' said Sarkar. He referred to the satisfaction expressed by US president Barack Obama over the take-over of the ministry of finance by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh following election of Pranab Mookherjee to the post of President ; Obama has advised us to open up our markets for multi-brand retail trade ; it is clear what Obama wants' said Sarkar.

The chief minister also appreciated the initiative taken by artists of both the countries in organising the art exhibition and said if trade and commerce between the two countries could be expanded; it was also desirable that cultural ties between the countries are broadened. 'In case differences of opinion between leaders of both the countries persist , the people on both sides of the border can force respective governments to reconcile their differences ; we cannot erase the border but we can come closer in mind and heart if cultural ties are expanded' the chief minister said .

From the Bangladesh side renowned painter Israt Jahan Kakon said that after coming to Tripura the artists from Bangladesh were overwhelmed and a new realisation had dawned on them that art and culture unite people. He also appreciated the joint painting exhibition organised by 'Samskriti Samanway Kendra' (Culture Co-ordination Centre) of Tripura and 'Chhabir Haat', a cultural organisation of Bangladesh. 'For us this is a landmark event, such joint events and initiatives also bring people on both sides of the border closer to each other' said Kakon.
