State government resolves to introduce Chakma script in schools

Agartala, Aug 08, 2012 : The state government has resolved to officially introduce a new script as Chakma scrip in school level, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said here on Tuesday.

Chakma language is taught in school level from the first standard till fifth standard since years. All scripting was done in Bengali script till date since no unanimous Chakma script could be resolved. The state government had set up a state level committee for development of Chakma language in the face of growing demand for an unanimous script of the language. The committee reportedly found largely accepted Chakma script used officially in Mizoram and parts of Bangladesh.

Keeping the recent developments into account, the state cabinet today cleared proposal for accepting the script as official Chakma script today. Textbooks in the said script would be published and used in schools from the first standard till the fifth standard from the next academic year, said the Chief Minister.

Tripura currently provides school education in Kokborok language across 943 schools, Manipuri language is taught in 28 schools, Bishnupriya Manipuri language is taught across 36 schools and Halam Kuli language is taught in 49 schools. Chakma language is currently taught in 58 schools.
