Self-sufficiency in animal food by end of 12th Five Year Plan, says Aghore

Agartala, Jul 31, 2012 : The state government will attain self-sufficiency in production of animal resource-based food by 2016-2017, stated Minister for Animal Resource Development Department (ARDD) Aghore Debbarma here today.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference in the civil secretariat, the minister said that the state has achieved self-sufficiency in meat production while self-sufficiency in egg and milk production is expected to be attained by the next two financial years.

The state currently produces 25 thousand MT meat facilitating 7 Kg of meat availability per head for the state’s population while the national average of meat availability stands at 5.5 Kg per head.

Tripura has got a current production of 12.5 crore eggs per year. However, the state still imports around 3 crore eggs annually. The lowest production graph is found in milk production. While the daily national average availability of milk per head is found to be 281 grams, Tripura has barely succeeded to secure 79 grams per day till 2011.

The state government has adopted plans to ensure a monthly availability of 10 Kg meat and 64 eggs per head in the state by the end of 12th Five Year Plan.
