2.25 lakh covered by social security schemes in Tripura

Agartala, Jul 29, 2012 : Altogether 2, 25,691 people are covered under sixteen social security schemes in Tripura, Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Bijita Nath said here on Saturday. Interacting with the media at a press conference in civil secretariat, Smt. Nath said that out of sixteen social security schemes operational in the state, 13 are run by sole initiatives of the state government while the rest are shared by central and state government on a 50:50 ratio.

Speaking about the state’s financial involvement in social security schemes, the minister said that Tripura has currently got Rs. 76 crore 19 lakh 40 thousand stakes for running all 16 schemes. A total of Rs. 115 crore 31 lakh 40 thousand is involved in these schemes out of which the central government accounts for Rs. 39 crores 12 lakh.

Centre and the state shares a 50:50 ratio in implementation of National Old age Pension, National Widow Pension, pension for the disabled (physically challenged and visually impaired) schemes. The state runs 13 other social security schemes on its sole initiatives. Three new centre-state shared schemes for unmarried women above 45 years of age, 100 percent visually challenged persons and people with 80 percent or above physical challenges.

The government is also trying to smoothen the process of reaching the benefits of the schemes to concerned beneficiaries by stressing on augmentation of banking services in the sector. “We have got 90 percent of the beneficiaries covered by baking services. The state government is initiating measures to cover the rest under the services as well”, said Smt. Nath.
