Bangladesh object to 15 projects of Tripura, says Badal

Agartala, Aug 04, 2012 : Fifteen projects of the PWD (Water Resource) department were stopped in the midway due to objections from Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh during the last few years, PWD minister Badal Choudhury said on Friday. Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference on the day, the minister stated that 14 Lift Irrigation (LI) projects of Sabroom sub-division in South Tripura district were stalled due to objections of the neighbouring nation. A Lift Irrigation project at Amzadnagar of Belonia sub-division also came under their objection, added he.

The minister also said that Bangladesh raised objection in a flood control action plan on Kata Muhuri, a distributary of River Muhuri several years back. The project was supposed to strengthen embankments of the river to check flood-like conditions in the area. Three other projects in Sabroom sub-division faced objection in 2003 as well. However, initiatives of work from the other side in border-adjacent areas paved way for a bilateral understanding based on which both nations are working in the bordering areas till date. Work is currently going on at 21 sites in the Indian side and 16 sites in the Bangladesh territory.

The flood control programme in Belonia and construction on River Feni were stalled on mutual understanding. Speaking about the progress of dialogue regarding work on River Feni, the minister said that the talks are progressing on positive sides. “The dialogues between India and Bangladesh on River Feni are moving in positive sides. There are a few negative sides as well but we are hopeful that they would be sorted out soon”, said Choudhury.
