Bank employees and officers strike paralyse banking

Agartala, Aug 22, 2012 : The banking activities were paralyzed in Tripura along with other parts of the country as employees of public sector and private banks went on a two-day strike on Wednesday to protest proposed amendments in banking regulations and outsourcing of jobs.

The united forum of Bank’s employees and officers unions staged the strike in support of their demands. Normal banking activities were crippled in all public sector banks and some private banks.

Earlier, on Tuesday ‘the United Forum of Banking Union’s activists organized a protest meeting in front of SBI’s Melarmath branch. The union leaders demanded withdrawal of proposed amendments in banking regulations and dismissal of the report of ‘Khandelwal committee’.

Union leaders said, over 10 lakh employees of several banks joined the strike on Wednesday.

Thousands of bank workers and officers staged demonstration in front of their respective bank branches including all major branches of State bank of India (SBI) and other public sector and private banks since Wednesday morning. 

Among other things, the employees are protesting the government's move to amend the banking laws bill, currently pending before parliament.

Among the operations hit were normal in-house across the counter services for ordinary customers, foreign exchange transactions, export-import and local bills, clearing of all types of cheques, bank locker operations, capital markets and other activities carried out through banks.

The strike is also opposing outsourcing of work to outside agencies, and other anti-labour policies of the union government.
