Steady progress of tribal communities from 1998, says Aghore

Agartala, Aug 04, 2012 : Tripura’s tribal population has had a steady progress of socio-economic condition during last few years with steady decline in population under shifting cultivation, Tribal Welfare Minister Aghore Debbarma said here on Friday. Speaking to reporters at civil secretariat this evening, the minister said that while the state housed around 40 thousand jhumiya families in 1972, the latest census of 2006 on tribal population under shifting cultivation has come down to 27 thousand 475 families. The state government had adopted a 25-point development programme and a 37-point development programme for alleviating these communities in 1999 and 2003 respectively, added he.

Claiming that the state has undergone massive development among tribal communities, Debbarma today said that a large number of tribal families have moved away from nomadic shifting cultivation, especially after benefits under Forest Rights Act (FRA) were introduced. 1, 68,839.129 hectare land was allocated to 1 lakh 20 thousand 60 beneficiaries under FRA till June, 2012, added he.

The minister also said that massive development has been observed in literacy rate of the tribal groups. Over 50 percent of the tribal population of Tripura is currently literate with 44.60 percent literacy among the females. Education rate has also considerably risen among the tribal groups, said the minister adding that 100 percent students, who appeared in Madhyamik examinations from Ekalavya Model Schools set up under auspices of the department, emerged with flying colours since 2007-2008.

Manindra Reang, minister for TRP & PTG, informed that the state government has undertaken massive development plans for vulnerable tribal groups. 1, 53,363 people from primitive tribes are currently living in 915 PG localities in the state. 44 thousand 880 people from these communities were benefited under different central schemes during last few years, stated the minister.
