Agartala, Aug 18, 2012 : Terrible violence erupted at Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office at Agartala on Saturday afternoon after the SDM denied financial assistance for upcoming Holy Eid festival to a delegation from the local religious minority.
Asked about the incident, SDM (Sadar) Manik Lal Das said that a delegation of few women from the Mohammedan community met him with demands of financial assistance for the upcoming Eid festival. The financial aid was provided to them by all previous Sub-Divisional Magistrates, they claimed. However, SDM ML Das declined to provide the requested assistance to them saying that existing regulations have got provisions for allowing financial assistance for Holy Eid to people from the community holding BPL cards only.
“I told them that financial assistance can be provided only on the basis of valid BPL cards. They readily denied the fact and said that all previous SDMs used to provide them with the said aid”, SDM Das said this evening. He also said that a section of supporters of the delegation got excited at the incident and started a rampage in which two vehicles of the SDM office were destroyed alongwith few furniture of the office.
Sanjoy Biswas, Officer-in-charge of West Agartala police station, who rushed to the spot with a huge contingent of police, informed later tonight that the situation was brought under control soon after police picket was deployed in the area. Large number of police personnel were deployed to keep the situation under control till latest reports came in.
