Tourist footfall rises in Tripura

Agartala, Jul 31, 2012 : Tourist footfalls have considerably risen in the state over the last three years. Tripura doubled its revenue generation from tourism sector in 2011-2012 compared to 2008-2009, ICA Minister Anil Sarkar said here in the sidelines of a press conference on Monday.

The minister said that the Tripura Tourism development Corporation (TTDC) generated total revenue of Rs. 1.87 crore in 2011-2012 from tourism sector. Revenue generation from tourism stood at Rs. 64 lakh 66 thousand 283 in 2008-2009.

The minister also informed that the state had 2 lakh 45 thousand 745 domestic tourists in 2008-2009 while the figure rose to 3.59 lakh in the last financial year. 3,410 foreign tourists visited the state in 2008-2009 while 6,550 foreign tourists paid visit to the state in 2011-2012.

The government has recently shifted its policy of focusing on historical tourism alone, said Sarkar. The tourism corporation has undertaken a massive task of promoting eco-tourism based on the greenery of the state in association with the forest department, he added. “We feel that forestry and tourism coincides each other at a particular spot. Tripura has got a very vast treasure of lush greenery and scenic beauty”, the minister said.
