Export-import trade, goods transportation suspended in all LCS

Agartala, Aug 17, 2012 : The import-export business and transportation of goods between India and Bangladesh has been suspended for nine days from August 15 to August 23 next in all eight land custom stations at Indo-Bangla border in Tripura including Akhaura check post.

Sources in the Akhaura Land custom station (LCS) said, keeping in view the festival week of Ramadan and other holidays including Independence Day of India, from Friday-the official holiday of Bangladesh, both business communities have decided to suspend the export-import business.

The suspension of export-import has affected the fish supply in Tripura and there is a severe scarcity in fish supply in the markets and as result, fish price of the local breeds has gone up to Rs 500 per Kilogram, the prices of fishes including delicious ‘Hilsa’ abruptly hiked in all major markets of Tripura.

All the major markets of Tripura depend on the import of fish from Bangladesh.

It may be recalled here that Bangladesh government had recently imposed ban on export of Hilsa in India for Ramadan festival. The bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh through Akhaura LCS has executed business of about Rs 1.5 crore in each day.

The Akhaura LCS has been mainly dealing with import business from Bangladesh for catering the domestic need of fish, edible items, melamine and toiletries, ready-made garments and stones chips in Tripura, but the suspension of formal trade badly affected the state markets.
