Four lane bridge to come up on River Feni

Agartala, Aug 22, 2012 : The state government has decided to build a four-lane bridge over River Feni connecting Tripura and Bangladesh, a highly placed source of Tripura’s ruling Left Front government said on Wednesday. A detailed proposal of the site, technical aspects of concerned construction, approach roads leading to the actual bridge etc were shown in a presentation by IL&FS in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on the day before. The CM including Industries and Commerce Minister Jitendra Chaudhury, Chief Secretary Dr. SK Panda, Principal Secretary LK Gupta and other officials, who attended the presentation, were reported to have expressed satisfaction at the proposal.

Tripura had been demanding initiation of a new corridor through Bangladesh which could facilitate a massive command on trade activities across the entire South-East Asian nations with the help of Chittagong port. The sea port is barely 75 Km away from Indo-Bangla international border at Sabroom sub-division in the South Tripura district. The issue was amid discussion in higher ups of Bangladesh and India for a long time and the neighbouring nation approved it recently.

The final decision was reported to have kept provisions for construction of a 15 Mt wide four-lane bridge with four-lane approach roads on both sides, 1.5 Mt wide footpath on both sides for smooth traffic movement including other state-of-art facilities. The entire project cost is estimated around Rs. 73 crores, the source said.
