Additional PDS benefits to 86 thousand listed BPL in Tripura

Agartala, Aug 17, 2012 : Tripura has resolved to allow additional benefits to around 86 thousand listed BPL people from September, 2012, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said on Friday. Speaking to reporters in at a press conference on the day, the CM said that the Government of India has approved 20 thousand 307 MT rice to the state as additional allotment on adhoc basis. The additional allotment would be available from September, 2012 till March, 2013. The state government resolved in a cabinet meeting held on August 14 that the state government would allow the benefit to around 86 thousand listed BPL families enrolled during the latest officially approved BPL survey of 1997-1998, the CM said.

Sarkar further said that the government has asked all District Magistrates to collect district-wise statistics on the issue to figure out beneficiaries under the resolution. All the enlisted beneficiaries would be allowed 35 Kg rice per month at Rs. 6.15 during the specified timeframe, added he. Over 9,000 APL families in Dhalai district are currently recognized as adhoc BPL and are allowed additional benefits of rice allocation through the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Speaking about the prospects of the benefit, the CM said that the state government has already asked New Delhi to ensure continuation of the resolution of additional rice allocation. However, there is no word from the central government yet, he said.
