High security alert for Independence Day

Agartala, Aug 13, 2012 : Massive security arrangements have been made across the state for peaceful observance of 65th Independence Day on Wednesday amidst high alert from Union Home Ministry in entire Northeast region.

As part of security arrangements all interior police stations are now conducting raids in militant infested areas. Counter insurgency operations were also intensified during the period of last one month.

Police said, apart from these, all the urban police stations of the state have also been conducting search operations in all busy market places, rail stations, bus stands, airport and hotels. Police also pressed into action dog and bomb squads in Agartala and other places of the state that would continue up to peaceful observance of I-day.

Central intelligence wings and the union home ministry have alerted all the state governments of Northeastern region to keep a strict vigil in the run-up to Independence Day and prevent any attempt of militant outfits to create violence, said Nepal Chandra Das, IGP.

It may be mentioned here that, this year, the celebrations come a month after over ground NLFT leader Dhanu Kalai and his associates were arrested from the capital with huge amount of cash. 

Das added that Security forces had been deployed in all sensitive and vulnerable areas known to be insurgent stronghold and in all busy places of the state including Agartala.

He said, both the central and state governments have also asked the Border Security Force (BSF) to tighten security along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent trans-border movement of militants.

Police and central para-military personnel, accompanied by bomb disposal units and dog squads have been continuing their search operations at airports, hotels, bus terminals, major markets and national highways, Das said.

In a separate directive, the director general of civil aviation has asked airport authorities to tighten the vigil in and around all airports in Northeastern states.

Official sources said, entry of people inside airport terminal buildings, excluding aircraft passengers, has been barred till Aug 20. Several other security measures have also been taken in and around airports.

Police also tightened security on National Highway-44 and other highways with additional deployment of security forces, said Das informed over telephone.

However, seven separatist outfits -- including the Tripura People’s democratic front (TPDF) anti-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) of Assam, Manipur and Meghalaya have called a 17-hour general strike from midnight of Tuesday and boycott of Independence Day celebrations.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has also decided to cancel and reschedule all night trains through Assam and Tripura until Aug 17 for security reasons.
