Tripura hopeful of becoming self-sufficient in food-grain production

Agartala, Jul 27, 2012 : Agriculture Department upheld an account of achievements in the sector since 1972 on Thursday saying that Tripura is expected to attain self-sufficiency in food-grain production within the 12th Five Year Plan period.

Though Tripura fell short of achieving self-sufficiency in food-grain production till 2012, the state has succeeded to reduce food deficit rate from 37 percent as recorded in 2000-2001 to 12 percent in 2011-2012. Speaking about achievements of the state’s ruling Left Front government in the sector, Agriculture Minister Aghore Debbarma said at a formal press conference that high-yielding varieties of rice production is being practiced on 86,000 hectares. “Tripura has scored much higher in average rice production per hectare compared to the national average. The national average stands at 2,200 Kg per hectare; Tripura ranks it at 2,700 Kg rice per hectare”, said he.

The state’s ruling Left Front government had adopted a perspective plan of achieving self-sufficiency in food-grain production in 2000-2001 over a period of 10 years. Speaking at formal unveiling ceremony of an account of the department covering activities and achievements from 1972-2012, Agriculture Minister Aghore Debbarma stated that the state still lacks in production of 70 thousand MT of rice. Estimates of the department testify that the state has got a current deficit of 1.26 lakh MT of good-grains including pulses, corn and wheat. However, he added that the state government has succeeded to cover 90,000 hectares of land by regular irrigation.

Asked about his take on possibilities of Tripura attaining self-sufficiency in food-grain production, Additional Chief Secretary KV Satyanarayana said that the government is hopeful of attaining self-sufficiency within 12th Five year Plan period. “Progress is very high in production sector. We are continuing capacity building, agriculture-aid distribution and subsidiary assistance to the farmers all along”, he said.
