Domestic Violence: NEICMCR holds workshop

Agartala, Jul 29, 2012 : A two-day long workshop on Woman and the ‘Impact of Domestic Violence Act 2005- Tripura Perspective’ was inaugurated at TB Association Hall on Saturday. The North East India Center for Mass Communication and Cultural Research arranged the programme with financial assistance from National Commission for Women (NCW).

Purnima Roy, Chairperson of Tripura Commission for Women, inaugurated the workshop in presence of Hasi Rani Bhattacharjee, Sabhadhipati of North Tripura Zila Parishad and Satya Gopal Chattopadhaya, Member Secretary of TSLSA, as guests.

In her speech, Ms Roy spoke up against domestic violence and expressed concern over the rise in domestic violence involving pregnant women.

The chairperson stated that the main reasons women suffered abuse at the hands of their relatives included their lesser participation in household work, the demand for male children and the drinking habits of husbands. She lauded the organizers and asked them to carry forward the task in future. Ms Roy also released a news letter- Domestic Violence Act 2005.

Ms Bhattacharjee said, “we can’t just keep quiet after knowing their problems. We are thus asking government bodies, besides people, to join hands in the fight against violence on women”.

Chattopadhaya stressed on the poster campaign with the message “Domestic violence is a punishable offence”.

NEICMCR secretary Satyendra Chakraborty listed out the attempts undertaken by the organization for the welfare of society and thanked NCW for its co-operation. On the occasion, the elected members of Gaon Panchayats besides NGO women and journalists attended the inaugural session. A cultural programme was also staged. Samar Bijoy Chakraborty, who presided over the function, said that women are unaware of their legal rights.

Notably, NEICMCR had arranged free computer training and mobile repairing workshops at East Pratapgarh with financial assistance from Gandhi Smriti O Darshan Samiti, New Delhi to ensure income generation among the unemployed local youths. Altogether fifty youths attended the camps.
