Congress leaders court arrest

Agartala, Aug 23, 2012 : Congress leaders including MLA Ashish Kumar Saha and others courted arrest on Thursday amid a road blockade in support of computer faculties agitating for regularization and better pay. Ex-councilor Dipak Majumder, Ex-Councilor Babul Dutta, Tripura Pradesh Congress SC Department convener Smt. P Sarkar and others participated in the road blockade on the day demanding immediate initiatives from the state government to accept demands of agitating faculties.

MLA Ashish Kumar Saha said later today that Congress would resort to larger scale of movement if the state government doesn’t accept demands of the computer faculties forthwith. “The central government has approved Rs. 20 thousand for computer faculties and the state government is depriving them from their legitimate rights. We will not tolerate this”, he said. They were arrested amid huge hullabaloo near RMS Chowmuhani in Agartala this afternoon while staging road blockade in support of the faculties.

The state government announced a direct hike of Rs. 2,000 on the existing pay of computer faculties on Wednesday. An official communiqué of the government stated that computer faculties serving under ICT@ School Project in the state would be getting Rs. 5,000 from now on instead of Rs. 3,000 as monthly pay. However, the government maintained status quo on the computer facultys’ demand of regularization saying that the centrally sponsored scheme is monitored by the state government and the state hasn’t got any stakes in the issue.
