Tripura gains 59 times growth of industries in four decades

Agartala, Jul 28, 2012 : Tripura’s ruling Left Front government on Saturday released an account of achievements in industrial sector during the last four decades. The state has achieved growth in number of active industrial enterprises since 1972 by 59.21 times, 20 times growth in foreign trade since 1998, 283 percent growth in bamboo sector and 32 times growth in rubber sector since 1998, Industries and Commerce Minister Jitendra Chaudhury said on Friday.

Interacting with the media at a press conference this evening, the minister said that Tripura used to have barely 38 registered industrial enterprises in 1972. The state is currently having 2288 active government registered industrial enterprises.

Speaking about foreign trade from the state, the minister said that the sector started from 1998 itself. “No records of foreign trade can be found beyond 1998. Rs. 15.46 crores foreign trade involvement was found in the debut year while it stands at Rs. 330.60 crores in 2012”, said he. Foreign trade along Tripura borders mainly focuses on cross-border trade with neighbouring Bangladesh. “Tripura is currently importing cement, foods and beverage, fishes, seeds, steel etc from Bangladesh. Export bulk is, however, not that prominent yet”, he added.

Chaudhury further said that the government is contemplating to initiate better capacity building in industrial sector. “We have got 8 Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in the state. Four more are expected to come up by September, 2012”, said he.

Chaudhury also said that the state has got massive impetuous in handloom, handicrafts and sericulture in the last four years. “We used to have 16.55 MT of silk cocoon production in 2007-2008. The count today stands at 31.932 MT, over double in four seasons”, said Chaudhury. The government is also focusing on value addition of silk cocoons produced in the state. “Production of silk sarees soared from 543 pieces in 2007-2008 to 3,969 pieces as recorded in 2011-2012”, the minister added.
