Two border guards injured in clash with B’deshi smugglers

Agartala, Aug 20, 2012 : Three people including two border guards and a Bangladeshi smuggler were injured during a clash between BSF and Bangladeshi smugglers at bordering Safrikandhi village in Kailasahar under Unakoti district on last night.

Sources said, a contingent of BSF jawans posted Safrikandhi village near the Indo-Bangla pillar no-1859 in the wee hours of Saturday, noticed that a group of Bangladeshi smugglers were engaged in smuggling of Indian tobacco products through the barbed wire fencing at Indo-Bangla border near the pillar no-1859.

When BSF jawans of 110 battalion tried to stop the smugglers from smuggling into Indian territory, Bangladeshi miscreants’ pelted stones targeting the jawans, while on retaliation the BSF jawans fired four rounds targeting the smugglers.

As a result, two BSF personnel Kamalesh Kumar Dwibedi and K D Singh sustained injuries and an unknown smuggler also sustained injuries, said sources.

Among the injured jawans, Kamalesh Kumar Dwibedi was shifted at G B Hospital in critical condition.

Later, in the course of search operation BSF recovered large quantity of Bidi (tobacco) and mobile phone with Bangladeshi SIM.

After the incident was reported, a large contingent of BSF and Police rushed to the spot. Top BSF officials also visited the site and hold a meeting with border guards and local villagers.

Top BSF officials claimed that after the Safrikandhi incident, security has been tightened to prevent such kind of activities.

BSF, however, said that they are keeping a close vigil on the border and are determined to foil any infiltration and smuggling bid from neighbouring Bangladesh side. It may be recalled here that Tripura surrounded by Bangladesh in three sides shares about 856 KM with the neighbouring country.
