No Tripura student affected by rumour mongering in Karnataka

Agartala, Aug 16, 2012 : Amidst the fast spreading rumours of possible attack on the people of Northeast in Karnataka and other parts of the country, especially for Assamese, till now no Tripura students and professional have been affected and there are no reports of Tripura students and professionals leaving Bangalore or Hyderabad.

In view of spreading rumours that Northeast people will be attacked by a section of miscreants, Tripura government on precautionary measures had already contacted with the authorities of Karnataka.

Official sources said, Chief secretary Dr S K Panda had contacted his counterpart in Karnataka and enquired about the situation.

The Higher Education department promptly started enquiry about the Tripura students, who are presently studying in separate institutions of Karnataka.

Kishore Ambuly, secretary of Higher Education department, speaking with tripurainfo.com said, so far no such incident was reported with Tripura students or professionals and the department has no such information of any Tripura student fleeing Bangalore. 

The HE department as well as the state government authorities is monitoring the situation, said Ambuly, adding that there is nothing to worry and asked the people from the state to not panic.

On Thursday morning, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said, people from the Northeast were safe in Karnataka, while warning that those spreading rumours would be severely punished.

He also requested the nation not to spread such rumours... there is peace, all steps have been taken, Shinde told reporters outside parliament.

"Strict action will be taken against people who spread such rumours," he added.

Home Secretary R.K. Singh echoed his message."There is no incident in Karnataka, this is just rumour. People need to avoid rumours... There is no incident... full stop... no incident," Singh said.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi appealed to the Northeast to not give in to rumours and not to panic. "There is panic amongst our students and people across India. A lot of rumours are doing the rounds; this is creating panic amongst the people. There is no need to panic, people should not give in to rumours," Gogoi said.
