Tripura asks for better power transmission in NE

Agartala, Jul 12, 2012 : Tripura asked Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) to attend pressing requirement of repair in Jiribam-Aizwal and Jiribam-Loktak phase II transmission lines. The lines are affecting power supplies to a large extent in Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur for quite some time, said Manik Dey, power minister of the state at meeting of NERPC in Faridabad.

“Northeast is expected to have a bunch of new power projects by the next five years. Kameing hydel project is expected to become operational by June, 2016, Bongaigaon thermal power plant is expected to get operational by August, 2013. Palatana power project would start functioning by August, 2012 and Tuirial hydel project is expected to get functional within 2015”, said Dey speaking to reporters on Wednesday.

Stating that the region is experiencing huge growth in energy demand, Dey said at the meeting that upcoming 726.6 power project at Palatana would serve a great deal in supporting the supplies. A 400 KV Associated Transmission System (ATS) of the project which was extended till Silchar is expected to get operational matching the commissioning schedule of the power project, he said. However, Tripura power minister observed that transmission of the entire shared power from Palatana for other states through single 400 KV line upto Bongaigaon wouldn’t be reliable. A proposal was placed to the centre for examining possibilities of linkage with National Grid through Bangladesh using a second 400 KV transmission line from North Bengal to Bangladesh.

Tripura also sought to withdraw 116 percent price hike of natural gas which came into effect from June, 2010. “The impact of price hike was further compounded by making domestic gas price linked to dollar-based exchange rates, Gas purchased by state power utilities from GAIL, ONGC is exclusively from local gas reserves. There is no rationale for linking purchase cost of such gas with dollar exchange rates”, said the minister. He batted hard for immediate rollback of gas price hike and its linkage with dollar-based exchange rates.
