Pranab’s whistle-stop campaign in Tripura

Agartala, Jul 07, 2012 : Former Union Finance Minister and prime contestant of the upcoming presidential election – Pranab Mukherjee visited Tripura on Saturday as a part of his poll campaign in the Northeast. Speaking to media after meeting with the ruling party and opposition at Agartala, Mukherjee said that he has received overwhelming support from the region. The presidential favourite met Chief Ministers and MLAs of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Meghalaya at Guwahati on Friday. Earlier on Saturday morning, Mukherjee had met Nagaland Peoples Front and Congress MLAs at a separate meeting in Dimapur.

Asked about his take on Presidential poll race against PA Sangma, other contender of the Raisina Hills fight, Mukherjee declined to pass any comments. However, he said that Northeast has given tremendous support to him.

Pranab Mukherjee toured across Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, UP, Rajasthan, Gujarat during his presidential poll campaign. His Northeast visit has brought a total shift in the position of PA Sangma’s contest-potential despite the prevailing lull from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her allies. Pranab, on the other hand, has got the support of Congress, UPA allies, Samajwadi party, BSP, Shiv sena, Janta Dal (United) while supporting segments keep increasing including Tripura’s ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Bidding adieu to his 50 year-long political career, Pranab Saturday thanked both ruling CPI (M) and Congress. He arrived in the state at 11.45 AM on the day, met Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, ruling legislators and CLP leader Ratan Lal Nath, Opposition MLAs, former chief minister Samir Ranjan Barman, Pradesh Congress president Sudip Roy Barman in two separate meetings.

Sketching out his upcoming priority sectors if he emerges victorious in the presidential elections, Mukherjee today said, “the prime job of a president is to protect and uphold the spirit of the Constitution of India. My focus shall be on issues like unity in diversity, celebration of plurality, federalism etc based on which India remains as the largest functional parliamentary democracy”. He left for Delhi from the state at 2.30 PM this afternoon. Mukherjee is expected to visit Jharkhand, Orissa, Chattisgarh, Chandigarh as well in his poll campaign.

Meanwhile, All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader Luizinho Faleiro said that Northeast has given total support to Pranab Mukherjee for the presidential election. “There is no support for PA Sangma. All political parties of the region have given astounding support to Mukherjee’, said he.
