Delhi asks Tripura to increase power tariff to match loss

Agartala, Jul 19, 2012 : New Delhi has asked Tripura along with all other states to increase power tariff to match with growing loss in the sector, said Power Minister Manik Dey this evening. A meeting of the 12th Five Year Plan was held at New Delhi on Tuesday on power sector. Principal Resident Commissioner of New Delhi Tripura Bhawan, RK Vaish represented Tripura at the meeting.

Speaking to reporters at the civil secretariat here today, Dey said that the central government has asked all the states to initiate outsourcing in distribution sector of power to keep at par with the loss incurred. While all the states asked for continuing government subsidy in power, Delhi has asked to initiate outsourcing by selecting franchisee in power billing, collection and maintenance. Montek Singh Ahluwahliah, vice chairperson of the Planning Commission of India, who was present at the meeting, reportedly scoffed at most of the states for failing to meet the stipulated targets of generation. Tripura, on the other hand, spoke against further outsourcing in power sector. “Tariff hike is not the way out of the crisis. The government should allow power at reasonable cost to agriculture and industrial sectors for facilitating growth”, RK Vaish said at the meeting.

The state government has also demanded facilitation of immediate rejuvenation of hydel projects operational in the state, expediting of work in Palatana-Silchar-Bongaigaon 400 KV transmission line, accepting 90:10 ratio for the proposed National Electricity Fund etc.
