Outgoing TCW head : More awareness needed to restrain dowry

Agartala, Jul 01, 2012 : In order to end the dowry as a curse to the civilized society, more and more awareness is needed, Tapati Chakraborty , outgoing chairperson of Tripura Commission for Woman said on Saturday. She made it clear that it would take time to remove the problem.

‘The society should come forward to abolish atrocities on women’, said Chakraborty.

Speaking with media persons at TCW office on Saturday , Dr. Chakraborty opined that awareness programmes would certainly help to reduce the rate of crime against women.

“The Commission has given top priority on awareness campaign for the public in general and women in particular. The crime rate will decrease if people are made aware of these various social curses,” said Dr. Chakraborty.

Expressing deep concern over the burning issue, Dr. Chakraborty emphasized if police, lawyers and judiciary perform their duties properly, the crime against women will decrease day by day.

Describing her 6-year experience, Dr. Chakraborty said that the Commission visited all Sub-Divisions under four districts including the remote areas of hills and plains of the state to reach out to the women and to make them aware of their rights.
