Lost is the hope with Pranab gone for Prez poll

Agartala, Jul 04, 2012 : Lost is the hope for Tripura with Pranab Mukherjee's Presidential candidature. At least till recently Tripura could hope for a bail out package for the financial constraints it had been facing- as the former Financce Minister had assured the state in this regard. But with Mukherjee gone the hope seemed to have been fading fast.

"There is no response from the central government in regards to the demand of financial bailout package yet", said Badal Choudhury, Finance Minister today.

Mukherjee had assured Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Manipur to look into their appeals for immediate sanction of financial bailout package in the face of alleged deprivation of 13th Finance Commission. Six out of eight NE states which participated at a meeting with former Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Vice Chairperson of the Planning Commission of India Montek Singh Ahluwaliah and 13th Finance Commission Secertary S Basu raised demand for immediate financial package alleging that recommendations of the Finance Commission had left them in deplorable conditions for the following five years.

The meeting had virtually accepted the allegetaions of deprivation as well - the first recognition of 13th Finance Commission’s faulty recommendations from New Delhi ever and assured to form the 14th Finance Commission within 2012-2013 defying the standard regulations to overcome the crisis.

A tripartite meeting with Planning Commission, Finance Ministry and all Northeastern states was also scheduled to be held by next 4 months beside regular exchange of status information from both sides. While New Delhi has not written a single letter to Tripura on the issue till date.

Expressing concern over the state-of-affairs regarding financial situation of the state the minister said that the state government was managing all ongoing development activities despite the pressing constraints. Recruitment in several segments was also carried out despite financial condition, Choudhury sought to point out.

Mukherjee’s exit from the ministry for Presidential polls had now thrown a spanner.
