Prez poll: Pranab to visit Tripura on July 7

Agartala, Jul 05, 2012 : The UPA’s Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee will arrive here to seek the support of the members of Tripura Legislative Assembly and MPs for presidential polls on Saturday next. The presidential election will be held on July 19 next.

Mukherjee will first arrive at Guwahati on July 6 next for support from the Northeast and will travel to Agartala the next day to campaign here as well. Legislators and MPs of the Congress and its allies from six northeastern states except Tripura are expected to gather in Guwahati to attend the former finance minister's campaign meeting.

Sources in Tripura Pradesh Congress said, Mukherjee will first meet the Congress MLAs and later he will meet MLAs and MPs of the ruling CPM. The meeting is scheduled to be held at Congress Bhavan on July 7 afternoon.

In the 60-member Assembly, the opposition Congress has 10 members and its ally INPT has lone member while the ruling Left Front have 49 members.

Mukherjee will get the support of 57 MLAs and 3 MPs as two Left parties- CPI and RSP have not pledged their support to the UPA’s candidature.

However, 1 CPI MLA and 2 RSP members are expected to abstain from voting in accordance with the decision of their central leadership.

Mukharjee will also hold a meeting with Congress’s state president Sudip Roy Barman and other state leaders.

Pradesh Congress leaders would receive Mukherjee at the airport from where he would be escorted to Congress Bhavan for the meeting.

Meanwhile, INPT general secretary Jagadish Debbarma in a press communiqué said that the lone MLA of his party Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl will cast the vote in favour of UPA candidate Mukkarjee. The party hoped that Mukharjee will win the race for Raisina Hills with majority.
