Open enclosure for caged animals of Sipahijala, soon

Agartala, Jul 17, 2012 : The caged animals belonging to various species in the Sipahijala Zoological Park under Sipahijala district of Tripura would get open air enclosures along with other modern facilities to improve the living conditions of the zoo animals.

The zoo authorities had submitted a ‘master layout plan’ before the Union Zoo authorities. This layout plan has already been sanctioned by the authorities for modernisation drive in zoo, said director of zoological park Ajit Kumar Bhowmik on Tuesday.

Giving details of the layout plan, Bhowmik said an amount of Rs 32 crore would be utilised for open air enclosures for animals, underground electricity lines, iron removal plant for supply of iron free water, most sophisticated infrastructures for animals, modern hospital inside the zoo and research facilities along with other developmental initiatives.

He added that soon the zoo authorities will send the ‘Master plan’ to central zoo authority hoped that from next year the facilities would be installed.

The state's lone zoological park is a home to 547 animals of 51 species, of which 33 species are identified as rare and endangered animals, said Bhowmik adding that within next ten years 31 more species of animals would be stationed in the zoo after being brought from other zoos of the country as per animal exchange process.

As per the master plan, the number of species would go up from 51 to 81 within next ten years, he said.

Bhowmik said animal exchange programme was initiated with the other zoos or the zoological parks for matching of pairs and introducing new animals.

‘We would like to make the open enclosures after formal approval of master plan up to the national standard so that the animals could live in healthier condition’, he added.

A female Sambar deer has got her partner on July 12, that came from Patna Zoological Park as part of exchange of one pair of clouded leopard cats, said Bhowmik.

He said process to bring animals like lions, giraffe and zebra is on and soon tourists will see such animals.

The Union authorities have recently given nod for breeding of lions, Bhowmik said, adding there is only one pair of female lions which are suffering from old age problems.

He hoped that soon the union authorities would approve the ‘pure Asiatic lion’ collection process.

Bhowmik also said that after approval of master plan, the Sipahijala zoo also have facilities for research works for biologists and animal researchers.

Only recently the zoo authorities have brought three Emu, largest giant bird of Australia to add another feather to its tourist attraction along with other exotic species of animals.
