Advocates observe 2-day cease work

Agartala, Jul 11, 2012 : The Tripura Bar Association observed two-day cease work beginning on Wednesday morning as part of the nationwide agitation initiated by the Bar Council of India (BCI).

Advocate Pijush Biswas, the president of High Court Bar Association of Agartala bench said, the advocates of the state would cease work for two days to oppose the Higher Educational Institutions Bill, 2010 as it was against the interest of the lawyers of the country.

The manner in which the bill was drafted and introduced by the Union HRD ministry is objectionable as it secretly tries to sideline the rights of advocates, Biswas said.

He added that the bill will harm the advocates of the country and their elected statutory bodies in the matter of legal education and legal profession.

Secretary of state High Court Bar Association, Arindam Lodh said that the National Accreditation Regulatory Authority for Higher Educational Institutions Bill, 2011 is against the federal structure of the country and entire educational institutions are sought to be regulated by a few nominees of the Human Resources Development (HRD) ministry.

Lodh added that the decision to cease work for two days was taken at a general body meeting of the Bar Association held here on Tuesday .

It may be mentioned here that BCI has decided a delegation of all the Bar Associations across the country will meet the Members of the Parliament of their respective constituencies and hand over a memorandum to them with a request to oppose the bill in the Parliament and out of the Parliament.
