Kharchi festival witnesses record gathering

Agartala, Jul 02, 2012 : The weeklong Kharchi festival on Sunday witnessed a record number of devotees amidst heat wave and mild downpour.

The festival organizing committee sources said above two lakh devotees and visitors thronged the temple complex on Sunday with enthusiasm, religious fervor and éclat.

Despite intermittent rain, thousands of tribal and non-tribal Hindu devotees crowded the temple with peace, harmony and fraternity among people.

Devotees from every corner of the state participate in the weeklong Kharchi Puja every year. Among the various festivals celebrated in Tripura, traditional Kharchi Puja marks the heritage of tribal and non-tribal brotherhood. The worship of the 14 Gods and Goddess Hara, Uma, Hari, Maa, Bani, Kumar, Ganesh, Brahma, Prithi, Ganga, Abdi, Kamesh and Himadri began after ritual ablution at river Howrah on the first day of festival.

Hundreds of stalls have been set up exhibiting various handicraft items, toys, utensils, cosmetic and food items in fair premises.

Moreover, the newly-built museum which is housed in old King’s Palace, acts as attraction for many devotees. The main temple- Chaturdash Devata Mandir is illuminated with colorful lights.

However, on Sunday due to poor traffic systems the main road between Agartala and Khayerpur and by-pass road witnessed huge gathering of all kinds of vehicles.

Owing to lack of police or traffic personnel, hundreds of vehicle were stranded in the middle of road due to mad rush among devotees.
