Much awaited Indo-Bangla extradition is on card

Agartala, Jun 08, 2012 : In one more step towards India and Bangladesh are now set to sign much awaited extradition treaty. The treaty once signed will largely help minimize New Delhi as well as Dhaka’s security concern in the immediate neighborhood. After the treaty is signed, both India and Bangladesh will be able to hand over the criminals and terrorists each country holed up in the other. Till recently, in absence of extradition treaty Bangladesh used to ‘push back’ the wanted criminals including those of ULFA to their respective countries

India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran during his visit to Tripura recently said, " matters relating to the extradition treaty had been discussed in the last Foreign Ministers' joint consultative committee meeting held in New Delhi on May 8. In all likelihood Bangladesh would soon sent a high power team to India to study the situation. India would also send a delegation to Dhaka for the same.

" On our part we are keen to sign the treaty at the earliest”, the Indian envoy to Dhaka said adding that it would help India get back militants of the north east India presently holed up in Bangladesh.

Besides, Saran said, "India also eager to arrive at a political consensus among all stake-holders on the all important Teesta water sharing,"

Indian High Commissioner who had recently taken over the charge maintained that Indo Bangla relations were on its best swing at this moment.

Saran earlier in the day visited the site of the bridge on river Feni in South Tripura district which would connect Tripura with Chittagong port in Bangladesh. He also visited Anandapara in Sabroom where a joint survey for construction of the bridge is on. He also visited the site of Sabroom Land Custom Station (LCS). IG BSF, Tripura Frontier, P C Meena accompanied him in all the places.
