Jiten meets joint team on trade facilities

Agartala, Jun 13, 2012 : Tripura’s Industries and Commerce Minister Jitendra Chaudhury stressed on infrastructural development in the existing Land Custom Ports(LCS) of the state.

The meeting was held between Industries Minister and the Indo-Bangla joint team here at Shilpa Bhavan on Tuesday. The Indo-Bangla joint team had come to state on last June 9 for a joint survey to examine facilities and infrastructures in Indo-Bangla border in Tripura and to boost cross-border bilateral trades.

Till Tuesday, the Indo-Bangla join team already visited Akhaura Check Post, Muhurighat LCS in Belonia subdivision, Dhalaighat, Manughat, Khowai Ghat and Ragna land custom station. Apart from these, the join team also visited the propose border haats which will be opened at Ragna in Dharmanagar subdivision, Kamalpur, Kasba in Bishalgarh subdivision and Srinagar in Sabroom subdivision.

Official sources said, representatives of Bangladesh expressed satisfaction over the infrastructure at Akhaura and suggested measures to improve facilities across the border.

The team headed by first secretary of Indian High Commission in Dhaka B. Shyam and Deputy Secretary of Bangladesh Commerce Ministry Muktadir Hussain .

Indira Murthy, the Director of the Department of Commerce in the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Deputy Secretary of Bangladesh Commerce Ministry Muktadir Hussain said, the joint team reviewed the existing infrastructures of land custom stations.

Both the team will send their report to their respective governments and suggestions to develop the infrastructures, said Indhira Murti adding that the review report and suggestions copy would also give to the state government.

Ten senior officials from the external affairs and commerce ministries and customs department of the two countries stayed in the state for last five days to examine infrastructure along both sides of the border before holding a meeting with Tripura officials and ministers.

Both the team members also visit talk to the local importers and exporters. Earlier, Bangladesh government gave approval for four border haats in bordering areas of Tripura. The border haats were mooted to increase the trade volumes between the two countries. The propose border haats will be opened at Ragna in Dharmanagar subdivision, Kamalpur, Kasba in Bishalgarh subdivision and Srinagar in Sabroom subdivision.

It may be recalled here that Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pankaj Saran had visited to the state on June 5 last. During the visit the Indian envoy also met Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and assured all possible help to strengthen bilateral ties with Bangladesh.
