Massive growth achieved in state revenue, computerization on

Agartala, Jun 01, 2012 : The state government's woes from an acute resource crunch is likely to be partially eased by the record collection of state taxes by the department of 'Taxes and Excise' in the financial year 2011-2012. The department has achieved a record in collection of taxes from sale of commodities, entertainment and agricultural income tax. The department had an 'ambitious budgetary target' of Rs 722.19 crore 'tax' collection for the financial year 2011-2012 which is highest in last thirty years' said Brijesh Pandey, Commissioner, Sale Tax.

Addressing the media in his official chamber Pandey said that the department of 'Taxes and Excise', launched in the year 1976, has come a long way in fulfilling its assigned task. In the very first year of 1976, the department's collection had stood at only Rs 72.3 lakhs out of which Sale tax's share was Rs 42.3 lakhs. 'The performance of this department is crucial to mobilizing the state's own internal tax revenue as it contributes over 93% of the state's own tax revenue to the exchequer' said Pandey.

He explained that sales tax formed the major part of the internal tax collection as realizations from entertainment tax, agricultural income tax etc was nominal. 'For the financial year 2011-2012 the budgetary target for collection of sale tax was Rs 600.00 crores but the net collection of the sale tax in the year was Rs 650.00 crores which at 46.9% growth is the highest among all states and union territories' said Pandey. He added that in the previous financial year-that is, 2010-2011-total collection of sale tax had stood at Rs 444.92 crores only, achieving a 18.6% growth rate . Pandey attributed the higher tax collection to heightened 'vigilance activities' of his department and continuing drive to increase collection from taxable goods transported by railway, air and surface transport. 'Our Churaibari check post on border with Assam had always been at the receiving end of allegations of corruption but in the last financial year they had shown 53.3% growth in collection of taxes' said Pandey.

Pandey said , “the achievement would not have been possible without the wholehearted support of businessmen, dealers , retailers and contractors industry. The organization expresses its sincere gratitude to one and all of them for their support and contribution”.

In order to sustain and further increase the growth the department of 'Tax and Excise' has decided to go for computerization of the entire tax administration through Mission Mode Project (MMP). At the initial stage the department will introduce electronics services like e-registration, e-payment of taxes and e-filing of tax returns from June 3. The services will be launched through a special programme at government-run Prajna Bhawan auditorium by the finance minister Badal Chowdhury on June 3. On the same day the department's new website www.tripurataxes.nic.in will be launched for the benefit of tax payers and registration seekers. 'The introduction of online facilities will help to minimize tax evasion and other malpractices to the benefit of the state government as well as of the people' said Brijesh Pandey.
