Indo-Bangla trades to get a boost

Agartala, Jun 02, 2012 : Bangladesh Finance Minister Abul Mal Abdul Mohit emphasized on the of strengthening Indo-Bangla trade relations with a focus on North East India.

“We need better ties and co-operation for the benefit of both the nations, particularly for North East India and Bangladesh”, the minister said while inaugurating the 3rd Indo Bangla Trade Fair (IBTF) at Dhaka on May 31 last. Abdul Mohit acknowledged the role of India and Tripura in particular for Bangladesh liberation movement and felt that Bangladesh should reciprocate this gesture by fulfilling the desire of Tripura and other NE states.

Tripura’s industries and Commerce Minister Jitendra Chaudhury along with other officials and business delegation who included Chief secretary Dr S K Panda took part in the Bangladesh-North East India Business Conclave held in the fair complex. The Tripura team highlighted the potential of NE and Tripura the field of trade and investments.

Dr. Dipu Moni, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh and other NE ministers including representative of different trade bodies and Banks in Bangladesh participated in the Conclave.

The Tripura team called on Dr. Dipu Moni and discussed on the ongoing bilateral issues between Bangladesh and Tripura. Dr. Moni has reiterated that Dhaka would full fill its commitments for better relations between the two.

The Chief Ministers and Ministers of NE Region also met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her official residence at Gana Bhavan and had hour long discussions. 

Chaudhury said, Sheikh Hasina took interest on the issues and immediately instructed her aides to look into the matters as well as to take them up with Indian counterpart.

He said that during meeting with Prime Minsiter, Tripura representatives raised several issues including the Railway (BG) facilities at the Ashuganj Port and that it should be made a multi-modal.

They also pointed out that connection between Ramgarh with Bangladesh Railway Network was necessary so that Railway head in Tripura could reach Chittagong Port directly. Besides, Tripura also requested Bangladesh to widen the road from Ramgarh to Karer Hat so as to connect Chittagong with Dhaka via Viswa Road. Tripura delegation told Hasina that in Tripura expansion of BG Line is under construction up to Sabroom.

Other demands included introduction of Agartala - Dhaka - Kolkata direct Bus Services, transshipment facility through Ashuganj Port. They also requested Hasina to allow Indian Authority to construct embankment over the bank of Muhuri at Belonia to protect the Belonia town from flood. 

Tripura team also requested Sheikh Hasina to introduce Bonded Licence Holders system through Akhaura Port to facilitate the export of Indian Finished Goods particularly products of Tripura Industries to enter into Bangladesh market. The facility is available in Benapole and Chittagong Port only.

“Prime Minister has responded on each every issue assured that her country shall do everything. She also acknowledged her gratitude to Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and people of Tripura for extending warm hospitality during her visit in Tripura in last January and termed it was a historic one”, said Chaudhury.
