CPM doubles vote in Nalchhar, Cong bites dust

Agartala, Jun 15, 2012 : CPM swept the Nalchhar by-election routing its rival Congress. The election was held on June 12 last following death of incumbent MLA Sukumar Barman.

Not only CPM candidate Tapan Das defeated Congress candidate Dwijendralal Majumdar but also doubled the vote margin. In 2008 the margin was 2532 and this year the Marxist doubled it to 4777.

There was whooping 96 percent vote cast.

Nalchhar by-election was an all important election for various reasons. While it was viewed as the run up for the next 2013 assembly elections, it was also the first poll after CPM was ousted from power in West Bengal. Besides, this was also for the first time in recent history of squabble ridden Congress, that all factional leaders put their weight behind Dwijendralal Majumdar.

This was also for the first election conducted under Sudip Roy Barman as new PCC president.

Congress was desperate to win the poll and went all out with a focus on their candidate’s fair and simple image that stood in sharp contrast to the CPM candidate Tapan Das who was reported to be very rich politician. However, at the end of the day it was the Marxists whose political and party network that worked and Das made a clean sweep.

This election was unique in a sense that no political party made any allegations of unfair means and both expressed happiness at the way voting was conducted.
