BSF says fire ‘accidental’, tension continue

Agartala, Jun 01, 2012 : Even as KK Nagar village in Sonamura is reeling under simmering tension, BSF officials here claimed the killing of the Swapan Deb on Thursday by the border guards was not ‘intentional’. The villager was hit by a flying bullet when the BSF jawans sought quell an agitated mob. 

“The BSF jawans on duty in border village of KK Nagar tried to prevent Swapan Deb and some others from sneaking into Bangladesh territory though the barbed wire fencing. It was then the villagers launched an attack on the jawans. The border guards opened fire to disperse them but unfortunately Swapan was hit on head”, said BS Rawat, DIG here.

However, villagers were not buying the BSF statement and demanding immediate arrest of the jawan.

Swapan happened to be son of CPM’s Panchayat member for Maheshpur Panchayat.

After the incident was reported large number of villagers gathered in front of Jatrapur police station and demanded immediate arrest of involved BSF jawan of 29th battalion.

Sources added, deceased villager Swapan Deb had requested posted BSF jawans in a fencing gate to open for feeding his pond fishes, which is situated at the outside of Indo-Bangla fencing.

But, BSF jawans refused to open the gate and after hot altercation, a BSF fired a round direct on his head. As a result, Swapan Deb died on the spot.

Tapan Deb, brother of the slain person in his complaint said "as usual my elder brother was going to the other side of the fencing with fish feed, but as he had an altercation with BSF over opening of the gate, they suddenly fired at him killing Swapan "without provocation" on the spot."

Sipahijala district police super Srmiti Ranjan Das and senior BSF officials rushed to the spot. Additional security forces were deployed after tensions are running high in the border village. 

Meantime, the slain man's brother Tapan Deb has lodged an FIR at Sonamura police station against the BSF firing.
