LF sponsored Tripura Bandh total and peaceful

Agartala, May 31, 2012 : Normal life came to a standstill in Tripura following the state wide 12-hours Bandh on Thursday called by the Left Front to protest the recent hike of petrol price. Since morning, capital Agartala took a deserted look. There were no vehicular movements on roads including NH 44. The city shops kept their shutters down and the markets remained closed. There was no market in the sub urban areas.

The passenger trains in Agartala-Dharmanagar-Agartala route were cancelled. Banks and financial organizations were closed; attendances in government offices and Civil Secretariats were virtually nil. All the educational institutions remained closed even as Tripura central University examinations were cancelled.

"India-Bangladesh trade was also badly hit as hundreds of trucks were stranded on the other sides of the Akhaura check post near here due to the shutdown," a customs official here said.

There was no report of any untoward incident in any part of the state. All necessary arrangements were made to maintain law and order. Several companies of para military forces and riot controlling vehicles were also positioned all over the state including capital city of Agartala.

However, air services on the Agartala-Kolkata, Agartala-Guwahati and Agartala-New Delhi routes have been partially disrupted due to strike. Passengers flying to Kolkata and other destinations from Agartala faced serious problems as no vehicle was available for them. Massive security arrangements were made at every nook and corner of the capital and its outskirts areas.

The Left parties are also observing a ‘protest day’ across the nation to protest hike in petrol prices.

Opposition Congress opposed the Bandh. BJP and its allies in NDA also called a nation-wide strike on Thursday in protest of hike of petrol price.
