Indo-Bangla joint survey for border trades begins

Agartala, Jun 10, 2012 : The Indo-Bangla joint team started five-day joint survey to examine facilities and infrastructures in Indo-Bangla border in Tripura and to boost cross-border bilateral trades.

Members of the joint team visited Akhaura Check Post and had a meeting with state and BSF officials. The Integrated Land Custom Station (LCS) construction has already got underway to boost the bilateral trade with Bangladesh. 

Official sources said, representatives of Bangladesh expressed satisfaction over the infrastructure at Akhaura and suggested measures to improve facilities across the border. 

The team headed by first secretary of Indian High Commission in Dhaka B. Shyam and Deputy Secretary of Bangladesh Commerce Ministry Muktadir Hussain is scheduled to visit Sabroom in South Tripura district to see the proposed site for a bridge over river Feni. The team will visit the reopened Sabroom LCS.

Ten senior officials from the external affairs and commerce ministries and customs department of the two countries will stay in the state till June 13 to examine infrastructure along both sides of the border before holding a meeting with Tripura officials and ministers.

Both the team will also visit Muhurighat LCS in Belonia subdivision and talk to the local importers and exporters. During five-day visit, the team will visit all the seven LCSs to see trade related facilities along with four proposed spots for border haats.

Earlier, Bangladesh government gave approval for four border haats in bordering areas of Tripura. The border haats were mooted to increase the trade volumes between the two countries. The propose border haats will be opened at Ragna in Dharmanagarsubdivision, Kamalpur, Kasba in Bishalgarh subdivision and Srinagar in Sabroom subdivision.

It may be recalled here that Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pankaj Saran had visited to the state on June 5 last. During the visit the Indian envoy also met Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and assured all possible help to strengthen bilateral ties with Bangladesh.
