AMC to set up modern waste dumping statns

Agartala, Jun 22, 2012 : Agartala Municipal Council (AMC) will build two modern ‘landfill stations’ and waste fertilizer factory at Devendranagar and Nagicherra dumping stations. 

The AMC had been facing serious popular protests against the open dumping of hazardous and stinking wastes in some areas.

Dr Prafullajit Sinha,AMC chairperson, said the council initiated to build the infrastructures for landfill stations and waste fertilizer factories in both of the dumping stations of Agartala city.

“ Now solid waste and garbage would not be dumped in open ground like Hapania dumping station”, said Dr Sinha adding that all the garbage of AMC areas would now be dumped in a scientific method to curb environment pollution by stinking wastes.

The AMC areas produce about 250 metric tons of garbage everyda and about 90 percent of the garbage, which are degradable waste would be processed for fertilizer, he said.

He added that, rest 10 percent garbage , which are non-degradable would be dumped in a 150 meters deep well.

The proposed landfill station and fertilizer factories would generate about 100 job opportunities for youths of the state, said Dr Sinha.

The city father smelled a rat behind the recent agitation against dumping of wastessaying that the demonstrations were politically instigated .

‘The entire land for proposed dumping station belongs to government and there are no habitations adjacent to dumping stations’, said Dr Sinha.

West Tripura district magistrate Kiran Gitte said, about Rs 35 crore would be utilized for setting up landfill station and waste fertilizer factory at Nagicherra and soon construction works would begin.

He also reiterated that entire land for Nagicherra dumping station are from overnment’s ‘Khash’ land.
