Bijan: Nalchhar victory, LF will handsomely win next assembly polls

Agartala, Jun 15, 2012 : CPI (M) retained the Nalchhar assembly constituency reserved for scheduled castes by increased margin . The by-election had come off peacefully on June 12 with a record turnout of more than 95 percent votes and counting was taken up at 8-00 this morning .

The CPI (M) candidate Tapan Das took early lead and finally triumphed over his main rival, Congress candidate Dwijendra Lal Mazumder by a margin of 4777 votes . While Tapan Das got 18001 votes in the constituency having a total electorate of 33,392, his rival Dwijendra Lal Mazumder trailed far behind with only 13,224 votes .

Both the BJP and Amra Bangali candidates secured less than three hundred votes each in the sharply polarized polls. The CPI (M) victory was all the more convincing as the margin of victory rose by 2245 votes compared with the assembly polls held in 2008 when the CPI (M) candidate late Sukumar Barman whose death in March this year had necessitated the by-election had won by a margin of only 2532 votes.

Even as jubilant CPI (M) cadres immediately hit the road with well-organized victory marches the party's state secretary and central committee member Bijan Dhar told media persons in a briefing that the people of Nalchhar had given a 'fitting rebuff' to Congress leaders including the PCC president Sudip Roy Barman for their 'campaign of lies and calumny'.

'We had expected a rise in our victory margin shortly after more than 95 percent voters had recorded their choice in EVMs on the poll day but this margin is a clear indication that the left front will handsomely win the next assembly polls scheduled to come off in February next year; Congress has also secured 2 percent votes less this time' said Dhar . He advised that the leaders of Congress would do well to draw a lesson from this defeat and remain with the people instead of making wild allegations. He added that from now on the party's priority would be to give further momentum to the campaign for the next assembly polls.

Interestingly , Congress leadership was uncharacteristically sober in their reaction to the by-poll rout. 'We respect the mandate of the people and accept it ; in this by-election the ruling party got additional benefit from the sympathy wave created by the untimely death of Sukuamr Barman who was a sitting MLA here for about twenty five years ; we will definitely try to improve our position further organizationally' said PCC president Sudip Roy Barman .

He also rebutted CPI (M) party secretary Bijan Dhar's prediction that the by-election victory is a firm indication of left front winning the next assembly polls. 'During the past five years there have been two by-elections , we have won the Town Bardowali constituency of Agartala and lost Nalchhar ; so it is a drawn game' said opposition leader Ratanlal Nath . He however called upon the CPI (M) leadership to rein in their 'unruly workers' in Nalchhar where they destroyed a Congress party office shortly after the poll result was declared.
