Tripura election likely in February

Agartala, Sep 05, 2012 : The election Commission of India (ECI) has begun process for conducting assembly elections in five states including Tripura, which are scheduled to be held by February, 2013 next.

Soon after the directive of ECI, the state election department of Tripura has already announced the schedule for the special revision of electoral rolls for the 60 assembly segments of the state.

As per the schedule, the draft electoral rolls will be published on October 1, 2012 including all voters under the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) scheme, while submission of claims and objections will be allowed till October 31. Claims and objections will be settled on December 1 and the final electoral rolls will be published on January 5, 2013.

Sources in the state election department said that the Assembly election will be held on the basis of the revised voters’ list. 

Sources added that as of now there is no indication of election being held in advance, but will take place on schedule- probably February, 2013. However, it is the Election Commission that will take the final decision.

Soon after the notification, all the SDMs and BDOs were asked to ensure proper arrangement for the revision of electoral rolls.

The ECI may conduct the assembly polls due in Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh separately. After conducting the elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, Assembly polls will be held in the three Northeastern states, added sources.
